Freelance AI Developer Rates in 2026: What You Can Expect

Jul 2, 20265 min

The rate question is often the first thing clients ask, and often the least well-documented. Here’s a transparent answer on market rates for a freelance AI developer in France in 2026.

Day Rates: Market Ranges

The daily rate (TJM) for a freelance AI developer varies by experience, specialty, and mission type:

ProfileAverage daily rate
Junior (< 3 years, little production AI)€400–550
Mid-level (3–7 years, some AI projects)€550–750
Senior (7+ years, real production AI)€750–1,100
Expert / complex AI architecture€1,000–1,400

These ranges apply to fully remote missions. Add 10–15% for on-site work in Paris.

Fixed Price vs Time & Materials

Time & Materials (T&M)

  • Billed per day worked
  • Suited to projects where scope evolves
  • Client risk: difficult to control total budget

Fixed price

  • Set price for a defined deliverable
  • Suited to missions with a clear scope (API to integrate, agent to build)
  • Requires solid specifications upfront
  • I apply this for short projects (< 3 weeks) with a precise perimeter

My approach: short scoping phase on T&M (2–5 days), then fixed price if scope is stable. Protects both parties.

What Justifies a Higher Rate in AI

A senior AI developer isn’t just faster than a junior — they anticipate problems specific to AI projects:

  • LLM costs: a poorly reasoned model choice can multiply the API bill by 20
  • Prompt quality: a badly structured production prompt means inconsistent results that are hard to debug
  • Agent architecture: an agent loop without MAX_STEPS is a production incident
  • Testing a non-deterministic system: testing an LLM is not like testing a pure function

These skills are earned on real production projects. They’re worth paying for.

What an AI Mission Typically Includes

For an AI agent development mission (2–4 weeks):

  • Feasibility audit and stack recommendation
  • Agent core development (loop, tools, prompt engineering)
  • Integration with existing systems (APIs, databases)
  • Testing (happy path, edge cases, limited load testing)
  • Initial deployment and technical documentation
  • 2 weeks post-delivery support

What is generally not included: long-term maintenance, internal team training, frontend development (unless specified).

Free Initial Call

I always offer a free 30-minute initial call to assess the project, estimate feasibility, and give a rough cost estimate.

It’s the best way to avoid surprises on both sides — and lets the client verify the fit before committing.
